the driver ,in doing this, is able to adjust the car(particularly longitudinal balance) according to fuel usage, tyre wear and any other conditions that are not allowing the car's best performance.
it's also a tactic used by a driver to stay in front of, or, over take another car(i.e;late or early braking)|||Thanks Luke...

|||Adjusting the brake bias.|||As far as I know F1 cars have paddle shifters on the steering wheel, the brake bias answer sounds right if I remember correct.|||it could be knee pad too(in case of Mark webber and jenson button..even david coulthard used 2 wear one all tall guys)..|||I don't know the answer but from the other peoples answers i would go with Brake Bias, i just wanted to say that i find it annoying the people whose answer with Shift lever, or gear stick etc, because i don't think they have used a stick since the 90's or before (i only started watching F1 few years ago, so i don't know exactly when they stopped using them) the gears are on the steering wheel, so please stop using that answer!
:)|||huh? are the controls and adjustments all in the steering wheel? there are no levers near their legs...|||it sounds like the shift lever to me. He is more than likely shifting because most, if not all, F1 cars are manual transmission.
