What does the F1 key on my Dell notebook computer do?

The F1 key on my notebook's computer has a picture of what resembles the screen. Although I've pressed it to see if it switches the display on/off, nothing happens. What does it do?|||If used in conjunction with another button, probably a Function (Fn) button, it likely toggles between your LCD screen and an attached external monitor.

Connect a monitor to your laptop and press F1 while holding down your Function button. When I do that repeatedly, my HP cycles through external monitor, monitor and LCD screen, and back to the on board LCD screen.|||For a pc, the f1 key isn't very important and you do not get a lot of use out of it unless you need help, or assistance.|||F1 is and always has been for Help, with any program you have running.
